Simon went on writing his poem about the sea all through the whole of his last year at school. And hating Isak.

Chapter 22

Simon and Isak left school in the spring of 1947. The end of term was no great day for them. The only important thing was that they were going to be free.

No more compulsion, thought Isak.

No more boredom, thought Simon.

Ruben threw a party in his apartment in town, which pleased Karin for a student celebration in her house at the river mouth was challenging. It was enough that for a few days Simon tore round the roads in his grand new cap which seemed to be glued to his head, then it was forgotten.

Isak was going on to Chalmers Poly. This was no problem as his marks were good enough. And Simon wanted to read history at college.

Erik and Karin were not pleased with Simon's choice. What use would that be and what kind of profession would it lead to, they asked? But Ruben talked to them about research, and said that in a few years Simon could be a teacher.

This comforted Karin, but Erik thought Isak had made a better choice. He would become a civil engineer which was what he had always wanted to be.
